Moira Grigor - How To Work With Children

When she was a teenager, Moira Grigor spent much of her spare time volunteering at children’s homes so that should could help those who were less fortunate than her. During this time, she gained a deep understanding of the best ways to work with children, some of which she has shares here.

Establish Yourself As An Authority Figure

Children will often fail to take direction or even listen to somebody that they don’t consider to be an authority figure. While simply being older is often enough with most young children, those in care will often struggle to trust you and will thus not listen to what you tell them in the way that other children would. As such, you need to establish yourself as an authority figure in any way that you can.

Find Common Ground

As previously mentioned, trust is important when caring for children and one of the best ways to nurture trust is to establish common ground with the child. Talk to them about the things they like and try to figure out how you can make use of this information in order to form a connection. It may be as simple as watching a film together or chatting about a videogame, but that connection will allow you to build a relationship that makes it easier to care for the child.

Be Patient

Every child will present their own challenges, so it is important to take your time and understand how to best work around those issues in order to work with the child properly. This is a skill that Moira Grigor found to be particularly useful when she moved on to a legal career later in life, so she notes that it is important not to rush things when you first start working with children in care.

Moira Grigor - How to Create A Business Plan

Moira Grigor started her own law firm after having first gained experience in one of the top firms in Birmingham. However, she quickly found out that being a skilled lawyer is only one part of running a successful firm, as you also need to have a high level of business acumen in order to be a success. Planning is essential, so she has developed the following pointers for people who are considering following in her footsteps.

Know Your Budget

Setting up a business is not cheap, so you need to understand the money that you have available and how best to use it in order to have the highest chances of success. Speak with an accountant and determine how to use the money at your disposal, placing particular focus on how you can reduce overheads.

Moira Grigor Don’t Spend Too Long

It can often be tempting to spend a large amount of time creating your business plan, but this can also lead to delays that prevent you from taking full advantage of market conditions. Be detailed, yet succinct in creating your plan. You should have a date in mind for the official unveiling of the business and do everything that you can to meet that date.

Consider The Competition

The level of competition you will face should be one of the first things that you research when starting your own business. For Moira Grigor, this meant looking into every law firm that offered similar services to her own, allowing her to identify areas of Birmingham that were not receiving the level of service they required. You need to do the same for your business, ensuring you take advantage of demand wherever it is available, instead of trying to compete directly with more established companies.

Moira Grigor - The Benefits of Being a Lawyer

Having been a lawyer for more than twenty years, Moira Grigor is more than aware of the many benefits that the profession can offer. If you are considering a career as a legal professional, it is worth keeping all of the following in mind if you are unsure about what being a lawyer has to offer you.

Career Flexibility

There are few career paths in the world that offer you the opportunity to work for yourself quite like the legal profession. While it is usually advisable to get a few years of experience under your belt at a respected firm early on in your career, this will give you the foundation required to start your own firm later on. If that isn’t a desirable option, there will also be plenty of opportunity for progression within established firms.

High Salary

Legal professionals have a skillset that is extremely valuable and often in demand, which allows them to command a higher salary than many other people. Those who are particularly skilled have enormous earning potential, though it is worth noting that this salary doesn’t come easy and you will need to work hard at all times in order to earn it.

Constant Challenges

One of the main issues that Moira Grigor has noticed with other jobs is the lack of different challenges on offer. A career that does little to push your limits will often lead to a person becoming bored with what they do and losing their passion, which is something that will not happen in the legal profession. Each case you work on will present its own unique challenges, constantly pushing you to develop as a professional in the process.

Moira Grigo - Traits That A Good Lawyer Must Possess

The legal profession is challenging at the best of times and Moira Grigor points out that there are many people who are simply not suited for the job. A good lawyer must possess a number of traits in order to achieve success, both for themselves and their clients, with all of the following proving important.

Honesty

As a lawyer it is your duty to act in a transparent fashion, being completely honest when you are in court and in your dealings with clients and other legal professionals. Those who try to hide behind deceit or are otherwise less than transparent in their work will often find it more difficult to gain their client’s trust, in addition to potentially setting themselves up for legal issues further down the line.

Analytical Skills

As a lawyer, one of your main jobs will be to consider all of the evidence and information that is available to you so that you can draw reasonable conclusions. As such, you need to be a competent and dedicated analyst, spending as much time as is needed on researching the various aspects of a case in order to construct a reasoned argument that will hold up when it is presented in a court of law.

People Skills

Moira Grigor notes that the legal profession requires a lawyer to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people. This means that you need to have a high level of social decorum and people skills I order to be effective in the profession. This will help you gain the trust of your clients, so that they work more effectively alongside you, in addition to helping you be more convincing when you make your arguments in the courtroom.

Moira Grigor - Travel Tips for the Savvy Business Traveller

Moira Grigor has travelled all across the United Kingdom. She grew up in West Midlands, Birmingham and studied at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls and had the opportunity to travel across the United Kingdom with her family during the school holidays. Moira Grigor has also travelled to France, Italy, and Germany, and plans to visit a couple of countries in the Far East. Here are some tips you can use if you are planning to travel.

Checking Luggage

If you are a business traveller you know that time is important. When you travel, you might want to give up the idea of checking your luggage when you board and get yourself a carry-on. Carry-ons are easy to carry and hold enough clothes to last you a week. With a carry-on, you do not have to worry about the airline losing your luggage, or waiting for half-an-hour at baggage claim.

Packing Tips

If you plan to use a carry-on, you will need to know how to pack efficiently. You will most probably need two pairs of shoes for your trip, so pack the shoes near the wheels of the carry-on. The same shoes should not be worn twice within 48-hours. Pack your shirts in the plastic dry cleaning bags and they will not get wrinkled. If they do get wrinkled, you can hang them up right next to the shower and let the steam get the wrinkles straightened out.

Since you are using a carry-on, you might want to wrap your toiletries in a plastic bag and pack them in your laptop bag. This will help when you have to pass through security.

Moira Grigor - Tips to Choosing the Right Lawyer

Moira Grigor is an experienced lawyer in Birmingham. She holds a Master’s Degree in Criminal Law and Criminal Justice from Birmingham Law School, University of Birmingham, and has worked at one of the top law firms in the city. If you are looking to hire a lawyer, there are a couple of things you will need to first look into. Moira Grigor has a reputation as one of the best criminal lawyers in Birmingham having worked on several high-profile cases.

Choose an Honest Lawyer

Most lawyers will offer an initial consultation free of charge. Take advantage of this free consultation to determine whether the lawyer is forthcoming and honest. While you might not be able to determine everything about a lawyer the first time you meet, there are several things you pick up from a person’s character within a few minutes of interacting with them.

If your lawyer is not looking at you in the eye while speaking to you, he or she might have a problem with the truth. Check with them what kind of cases they have litigated in the past. If the lawyer has been working with divorce cases, and you need a lawyer experienced in criminal law, you might have to look for another lawyer.

When you speak to your lawyer, ask him or her about your chances of failure or success. A lawyer who sounds optimistic and does not discuss the risks associated with your case might not be very honest. Every case has its downsides and risks, and if your lawyer is not open about it, then you might want to start looking for other lawyers.

Hard Work

If you are planning to become a criminal lawyer, you must be ready to work hard. As a criminal lawyer, most of the cases you work on will have hearings, investigations, negotiations, motions, including gathering a huge amount of documents that will need to be drafted prior to trial. In no way is the job going to be easy, so you will need to be someone who works hard.

Persistence

As a criminal lawyer, you will most probably come up against police officers, prosecutors, and even judges who will attempt to block you from doing your job. You will need to be persistent and be ready to go all out to get your job done. Your persistence could mean that the case you are working on will not result in a wrongful conviction.

Creativity

You will need to be creative so as to keep a fresh perspective. Doing things differently with an open mind will help you seize favourable opportunities and solve difficult problems. You might want to avoid trying to approach all cases with the same strategy. Be creative and treat each case differently.

Clear Plan

As a criminal lawyer, you will need to have the ability to think quickly on your feet. Of course, you will need to have everything planned out to the minutest detail, but you must have the ability to come up with a plan on the spot. When planning your case, you will need to carefully work through all the details and be prepared to go an alternative route if something doesn’t go according to plan.
